Burnley football club was formed in May 1882 and they were named as Burnley Rovers at the time. In the year 1888, they became founder members of the football league and over the next twenty five years, they failed to make a real impression in either the League or the FA cup. They spent most over the end of the 19th century in the second division. The club gained promotion in to the first division in 1913 with a side rated as one of the finest, including, Jerry Dawson and George Beel. In the year 1914, Burnley defeated Liverpool in what was the first all Lancashire FA Cup final and they went on to win their first league championship at the end of the 1920 – 1921 season. The club began to decline over the following 25 years and their fortunes began to improve when Cliff Britton was installed as the new manager at the club in 1946. The response was immediate as he guided the club in to the 1947 FA Cup final. During the 1950’s, Burnley became a first division club and they won the league title at the end of the 1959 – 1960 season.
Harry Potts was manager at the club when they won the title in 1960.
