After 12 years in charge at the club, Harry Potts left the managerial post at Burnley in 1958 and Jimmy Adamson took charge in 1970, and he was to go on and spent six years in charge of the club. He guided the Clarets to promotion in to the first division in 1973 as they finished the 1972 – 73 campaign off as third division champions. The 1973 – 1974 campaign proved to be a fantastic one of Burnley as they enjoyed a great season in the top flight finishing it off in a very strong sixth position, they also reached the semi finals of the FA cup, suffering defeat against Newcastle United. His last season in charge was the 1975 – 1976 campaign and he saw his side reach the quarter finals of the league cup, suffering defeat against Middlesbrough in the last eight. It was also a season that saw Burnley suffer relegation out of the top flight, a place they have never returned to. It was a time period which Burnley boasted many fine players, including, Leighton James and Martin Dobson. Joe Brown took charge at the club in the 1976 – 1977 season however left after a disappointing 16th position finish. Brian Miller took charge at the club in 1979 and the club suffered a painful relegation out of the second division at the end of the 1979 – 1980 season. They crashed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round as they suffered defeat against Bury.
