After the major disappointment of the late 1980’s, Burnley gradually improved as a football team and became a force in the fourth division during the 1990 – 1991 campaign as they finished it off in sixth position, reaching the play offs. The 1991 – 1992 season was a huge relief for Burnley as they clawed their way out of the fourth division, finishing it off being crowned champions of the division.
The 1992 – 1993 season was a fairly decent one for Burnley, they were unfortunate not to progress further in the FA cup as they suffered defeat against Sheffield United in the third round, despite putting on a heroic performance. They finished doff the campaign in mid table in their first season back in the third tier of English football.
The 1993 – 1994 season was a great one for the clarets as they discovered glory in gaining promotion in to the first division s they won the play off final. They also reached the third round of the FA cup, however suffered defeat against Charlton Athletic in the competition.
