Burnley struggled in their first season back in the first division as they finished it off in a very disappointing 22nd position, which in turn resulted in the club suffering relegation at the end of the season. They met Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup and in the second round of the league, suffering defeat against the Reds in both matches. The Clarets reached the second round of the FA cup during the 1995 – 1996 season as they suffered defeat against Walsall in the cup competition. They also struggled in the second division as they finished it off in a very disappointing 17th place finish at the end of the season.
Burnley met Liverpool once again in the FA Cup during the 1996 – 1997 season as they narrowly suffered defeat against the Reds in the third round; losing 1-0 in what was a fine performance by the Clarets. Burnley came narrowly close to gaining a birth in the play offs as they finished of the season in a very strong ninth position at the end of the campaign.
The 1997 – 1998 season proved to be a debacle for the clarets as they narrowly escaped relegation at the end of the campaign with a disappointing 20th position finish.
